5 Days Uganda Primate Safari Tour: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer To Kibale National Park And Visit The Amabere Caves And The Crater Fields

On day one of this 5-day prime tracking adventure, a guide will pick you up from your accommodation very early in the morning for a journey to Kibale National Park.

This journey will amaze you with the charming sights by the road and it will take between 5 and 6 hours over a distance of 300km.

You will have many en route stops, for example, at the Mityana local market, where you will have a sweet taste of pure Ugandan organic tropical fruits.

On your way, you will also encounter Uganda’s KFC version when you meet the fire-grilled, finger-licking chicken being roasted on sticks.

Your arrival at Mpanga Tea Estate in the mid-morning will give you an adventurous cycling experience. This tea plantation spreads over a rolling landscape with far-reaching views, making it ideal for mountain biking. As you bike, you will meet the estate staff plucking tea, and you can join them to feel the unique touch of this experience.

Then, a withdrawal from the activity will have you continue with your journey to Fort Portal Crater Lake Area. The residents will be glad to welcome you upon your arrival and with their great understanding of the area, they will be more than glad to tell you its history.

Amabere Ga’ Nyinamwiru caves

You will then visit the Amabere Ga’ Nyinamwiru caves, a breast-like feature that the locals believe to have been the breasts of Nyinamwiru. Nyinamwiru was the daughter of the self-enthroned King Bukuku of the ancient Bachwezi.

One of the folklores explains that King Bukuku, having been forewarned about NyinaMwiru’s son Ndahura, who would take over his throne, denied Nyinamwiru the opportunity to breastfeed her child.

Another legend says that King Bukuku cut off her daughter’s breasts because she refused to marry the man he chose for her, choosing instead to marry the man she loved. He, therefore, cut off her breasts to prevent her from breastfeeding her future children.

After the cave experience, you will hike to Fort Port Crater Lake Field. On the hike, you will pass through the challenging slopes of the Kyeganywa hill, which is surrounded by many crater lakes and crater hollows that represent one of the most beautiful sights in Uganda.

Kyeganywa Hill’s top will give you unmatched views of the Rwenzori Mountains on a clear day. After this exploit, your 26-kilometer journey to Kibale National Park will continue. You will then have time to relax, have dinner, and then have an overnight.

The highlight of the day was the delight in the folklore behind the existence of the unique features.

Your breakfast will range from very delicious tropical organic fruits to freshly baked confectioneries to energize and boost your body for the strenuous Uganda Gorilla Trek in Bwindi. In this experience, you will meet one of the gorilla families and have a full hour with them.

Leave your lodge with your packed lunch and gather in the park center, where a hospitable park sector warden will welcome you. He will then take you through the history of gorilla conservation in the particular park sector and Bwindi in general.

Still in the center, you will enjoy a miniature cultural performance from the indigenous Batwa locals, who will unveil their musical skills to you.

With your armed ranger leading the trek, you will then embark on the search for a gorilla family. On the way, you will encounter various birds, as Bwindi is a rich place that protects even Albertine Rift endemics.

You will also encounter other primates like black and white colobus monkeys, L’hoest monkeys, and different unique species for example, the 3 Horned Chameleon and many others.

Upon seeing the Mountain Gorillas, regard yourself as one of the luckiest people on earth to have been able to see the endangered gentle giants in their natural habitat. You will spend one hour with these magical creatures and if lucky enough, you will even experience the young ones breaking the 7-meter distance rule when they try to get closer to you to join in their games.

Note:

After this life-changing experience, you will head back to the park center, where you will be awarded a gorilla tracking certificate for your achievement.

A transfer to Lake Bunyonyi will then follow so you can relax from the strenuous gorilla trekking experience.

Your arrival at the beautiful tropical gem of the Kigezi Highlands will be a very fascinating experience as your eyes land on the tranquil waters of Lake Bunyonyi. This lake is dotted with many islands, hence its famed name, “The Lake of a Thousand Islands.”.

A boat cruise on this lake will lead you through several historical islands. An example is Akampene Island, also called Punishment Island. In this situation, unmarried girls who became pregnant had three options: starve to death, drown, or find a man willing to marry them without paying a dowry. The villagers allegedly refused to give an elderly woman beer, so she cursed the island upside down. She, therefore, cursed the island to turn upside down and drown them all.

From the boat cruise, you will then transfer to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

You will also meet many local men carrying farm yields on their bicycles and going to the nearest market to sell them.

Through an en-route stop for lunch at the Igongo Country Hotel, which is just a few kilometers outside Mbarara town, you will enjoy a delicious locally made lunch buffet. You can likewise try out the Ishabwe dish, which is the local dish of this region. After your sumptuous lunch, you will then proceed and visit the 1520 AD solar eclipse monument in Biharwe village.

You can even choose to hike up the hill of this monument to enjoy amazing views of the surging Ankole plains, which create a beautiful background for taking photos.

More Information

A guide will then reveal to you the intriguing history behind this solar eclipse and how it greatly changed the destinies of three great ancient kingdoms all at once.

You will then continue to the Equator point, where you will enjoy the fancy of standing between 2 separate halves of the world at the same time. Therefore, even take many photos during this magical moment.

At this point, you will also go through the water experience that teaches you how to differentiate the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere. This, therefore, helps you know which part of the world you stand in.
